We are in farm country...
Please be aware of our neighbouring cows and the slow-moving farm equipment that often travels on the road. Farm action will occur on the property in the planting and harvesting season.
Do you have a question?
Welcome and way to go for checking out something new! We were all newbies at one time. It makes a lot of sense to feel uneasy about trying yoga for the first time.
One of the reasons we adore yoga so much is how accessible it is for most people. The practice is less about how your body is moving (the physical practice) and more about noticing more glimmers of stillness within the body. At Fieldside there are no expectations of what you "should be doing." We want you to listen to your body, its edges (where your comfort zone ends) and honour what feels good in that moment. The teachers will provide options around breathing and movement suggestions, but keep in mind it is all optional. What you do on your mat is your business. This is one of the reasons why we do not have mirrors here; this serves to silence the inner critic and minimize comparison.
Please know you do not need to bend into a pretzel. Your only requirement is an open mind, self-compassion and the capacity to learn a new skill.
Each class type has a description explaining what the style is all about. You can check this out on the Offerings page of the website. A great beginner's choice is a Gentle or Hatha class. These classes involve slower stretching and movement, both sitting and standing. Another option is a Restorative class which sees the least amount of movement. These classes use props (pillows, blocks and bolsters) and you remain on the floor for the majority of the class (while lying, sitting, etc).
For the most part, we ask that chat volume be kept to a minimum in the studio as others may be trying to relax and settle. In the beginner classes we may encourage more discussion.
You are welcome to come 15 minutes before the class start time. Most classes are 60 minutes and start off with you in a seated or lying down position.. You will move through poses via instructions and options communicated by the teacher. Each class ends with a Savasana (shah-VAH-sah-nah or shih-VAH-snah), which is the final resting pose at the end of almost every yoga practice. This is a time of stillness, reflection and quiet. Once the class has ended, we ask you to place any props you used back in the closet and wipe down your mat. We provide cleaning spray and cloths.
